Movie Night

This month movie night will focus on William Shakespeare movie adaptations. Not the classic novels turned into classic movies, but modern ones.

So grab your popcorns and get ready to immerse yourself in a modern version of your most favorite Shalespeare novels!

O (2001)
A modern version of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ with young Julia Stiles and Josh Hartnett. Set in a high school it centers around basketball player Odin, the only black teammate, Hugo, who is liked by everyone, decides to set up the boys who stole his glory by taking his pride and his girl.

 

 

 

Romeo + Juliet

Rome + Juliet (1996)

Shakespeare’s famous play is sent into the hip modern suburb of Verona. Still retaining its original dialogue, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the the star-crossed lovers, with a tragic destiny.

 

 

 

West Side Story

West Side Story (1961)

Another Romeo and Juliet adaptation. Set in New York City with gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Maria and Tony meet and begin meeting in secret, planning to run away.

 

 

 

Hamlet

Hamlet (2000)

Shakespeare’s immortal story about Hamlet’s plight to avenge his father’s murder this time takes place in New York City. Ethan Hawke plays the titular character and must avenge his father Claudius the new head of Denmark, Hamlet’s uncle and now step-father.
