Number 9 Films and Film4 have joined forces to produce Carol, a drama based on Patricia Highsmith’s controversial novel The Price of Salt and already secured leading ladies Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska to star as well as John Crowley to direct.
Originally published under a pseudonym in 1952, Highsmith’s book centered on the romantic relationship that evolved between two women, Carol and Therese, who meet in a bustling New York City department store. You can imagine what scandal the book was in the early 50s.
Wasikowska will play Therese, a lonely store clerk in her 20s. Blanchett will portray Carol a glamorous and mysterious heroine who is coping with the breakup of her marriage, and struggling to stay connected to her daughter. Once her ex-husband discovers her relationship, he threatens to take full custody of their daughter, putting Carol and Therese relationship at risk.
Carol will go into production February 2013 in London and New York.
