Sam Raimi wanted to cast Hilary Swank as one of the main witches in the Wizard of Oz retelling Oz: Great And Powerful but Disney wanted Michelle Williams instead.
Disney won. Variety reports that Williams has gotten the job, and will play Glinda the Good Witch.
Raimi’s version of Oz tells the story of three witches; two evil and one good. Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis play the evil sisters while Williams is on the side of the Wizard, a snake-oil salesman who lands in Oz and helps Glinda fight for control of the kingdom.
I’m not sure why Raimi didn’t want Williams. Since Dawson’s Creek she has been mainly attached to indie movies. This is the second iconic character she has decided to recreate; this year she’s already playing another movie icon, Marilyn Monroe, in My Week With Marilyn, and now she will be doing the iconic Glinda.
Raimi’s Oz shows up in theaters, which Variety says could happen as early as fall 2012.
