Amy Adams has been chosen for the role of Lois Lane, the most important female role of Superman: Man Of Steel and of any other Superman movie ever done before.
Now that Zack Snyder is done with Sucker Punch and the result wasn’t what many expected. Snyder can dedicate himself fully to Superman: Man Of Steel, especially now that we finally have Lois Lane! But let us remember how the hard working journalist was played throughout the years.
Since the very first time viewers have seen Superman flying in the sky, and the man who could do anything and have any woman he wanted, he had only eyes for one; Lois Lane, the strong-willed journalist who has a professional relation with Clark Kent while flying in the skies with the Man of Steel.
Lane has always been an important character, in the comics as well as in on screens. Starting with Noel Neill. Neill was Lois in the 1948 and 1950 movie serials, opposite George Reeves in 1951’s feature Superman and the Mole Men, and then in the later seasons of Adventures of Superman from 1953 to 1958, again with Reeves. She also starred as Lois’s mother in the 1978 movie, and played the dying wife of Lex Luthor in 2006’s Superman Returns.
Then it was the time Phyllis Coates. Coates played Lane in TV’s Adventures of Superman from 1952 to 1953. She reappeared as Lois Lane’s mother in the 1990s’ Lois and Clark.
Superman also reached Broadway. Patricia Marand was the first Lois Lane on Broadway in the musical It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Superman in 1966, earning her a Tony nomination.
Later in 1974 came the TV adaptation of the musical It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman. Lois Lane was played by Lesley Ann Warren.
In the 1978 the movie Superman was released. This is probably the most famous Superman movie ever made. Christopher Reeve as the Last Son of Krypton and Lois Lane was played by Margot Kidder. Kidder appeared in the three sequels, and made appearances on TV’s Smallville in the 2000s.
In another Superman movie was released focusing on the romance between the characters, entitled Lois and Clark (1993-1997). Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher played Superman and Lois Lane. Hatcher later appear on Smallville, playing Lois Lane mum. (Yes it seems ex Lois Lane play the mother of the new Lois Lane, when they get older.)
Lois Lane was also an animated character voiced by Dana Delany in animator Bruce Timm’s take on the Man of Steel from 1996 to 2006. As you have probably noticed, two actress from Desperate Housewives, had previously played the role of Lane.
Then came the TV series Smallville. Canadian Erica Durance took the role of Lois Lane starting in 2004 for TV’s Smallville, which ends its run this year.
The late movie made of Superman, Superman Returns, saw Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and as the secret mother of Superman’s son. Despite the movie was a failure, Bosworth proved she can be a journalist.
In 2007 Superman: Doomsday, was released based on a popular storyline in the comics. Anne Heche voiced Lois Lane, who is Superman’s girlfriend in this telling.
A minor Lois Lane role was played by Kyra Sedgwick. She voiced Lois Lane in 2008’s direct-to-video movie Justice League: The New Frontier.
Redhead Christina Hendricks voiced Lois Lane in another animated Superman movie, All-Star Superman, announced in 2010 it still has an unspecified release date.
Finally the last add to the family; Amy Adams. For the reboot of the Superman film franchise, directed by Zack Snyder, Adams has been cast in the role of the professional, working journalist. The movie is scheduled for a December 2012 release.
Now, exclude the animated movies and Amy Adams. Who do you think was the best Lois Lane? For me it was definitely Margot Kidder. Superman was the first “superman” movie I have ever seen. And Christopher Reeve would always be my one and only superman. Up till now no one has replaced Reeve as Superman or Kidder as Lane. They were the best superman-Lois couple.
I won’t consider Smallville TV series. At least until Clark meets Lois played by Erica Durance. This is not how the story goes. Plus at the beginning the whole series was supposed to tell the story of Superman before he started working with Lois. It is good that they are ending the series before Snyder’s movie comes out.
What do you think? Who was the best Lois Lane?
